Malaysia’s top ranked women’s singles shuttler Tee Jing Yee pulled off a sensation China’s Wang Yihan 21-19, 14-21, 21-15 in 51 minutes to book a place in the USD 350,000 Yonex Hong Kong Open in Kowloon on Thursday.

It is the first time the Penang lass has reached the quarter-finals in a super series event but faces an uphill task for a place in the semi-finals as she is up against reigning world champion Carolina Marin of Spain. The Spaniard packed off another Malaysian Lydia Cheah with a 21-10, 21-10 win in 25 minutes.

China’s top ranked women shuttlers continued their slump in the super series events when top seed Wang Shixian was bundled out by her unseeded compatriot Liu Xin who won 21-16, 9-21, 21-15 in a 57 minute battle.

Third seed India’s Saina Nehwal, who won the China Open last week stayed in hunt with a 21-16, 21-13 win over another Chinese shuttler Zhang Beiwen. Saina, who is now ranked world No 4, needed only 31 minutes to advance to the last eight. However, Japan’s Nozomi Okuhara upset India’s P.V. Sindhu (No 7 seed) 21-17, 13-21, 21-15.

Meanwhile, Malaysia’s challenge in the men’s singles came to an end when Chong Wei Feng fought for 76 minutes before he was beaten by Japan’s Takuma Ueda 21-18, 15-21, 22-20.

In the women’s doubles Malaysia’s scratch pair of Lee Meng Yean-Lim Yin Loo fought in vain against fifth seeds Bao Yixin-Wang Xaoli of China before losing 21-19, 16-21, 9-21 in 52 minutes.
