Heavy torrential rain failed to prevent SMK Syed Hassan of Perlis from picking up the full points on Saturday when they did just enough to score a close 1-0 win over Selangor’s SMK Seksyen 11 in the Minister of Education League Cup Under-14 Super League.

In the match that was played at the Mini Stadium of SMK USJ 23, heavy downpour delayed the game for more than an hour.

But that did little to douse the enthusiasm of both teams for the match as they launched attacks after attacks much to the delight of the several hundred fans who had turned up.

And in the end, it was the lone strike from Ilyas Borhan in the 42nd minute that made all the difference when he blasted in from the edge of the box to give SMK Syed Hassan the full points.

“We are slowly getting into the rhythm. It is a bit slow but I believe that the situation is the same for both SMK Tunku Anum and also SMK Mutiara Impian. They will be better in the second half of the league,” said SMK Syed Hassan coach Azhar Razak after the match.

“The only team which should be assured into the next round is the team from Gambang. They have won all their matches so far.

“But we are still confident of making the next round. The heavy rain affected our usual passing game but I’m glad that the players played to instruction. We were strong defensively.”

The win allowed SMK Syed Hassan to strengthen their position in the top half of the Super League where they are now on third after leaders Gambang Sports School and also second-placed SMK Bukit Nenas of Terengganu.

SMK Bukit Nenas is also the defending champions.

The loss for SMK Seksyen 11 meant that they are entrenched at the bottom of the Super League with just one win and five losses from six matches played.

“We are just not creating enough chances,” lamented SMK Seksyen 11 coach Abdul Razak Salleh afterwards.

In the meantime in the Premier League, SMK Datuk Peter Monjuntin of Sabah pulled up to second in the standings following their comprehensive 3-0 beating of SMK Gunung Rapat of Perak.

Daniel Gabriel Francis grabbed the opener at the half hour as Neildeonry Bernard and Bilvin Berni then added further goals in the 41st and 58th minute respectively.

The win for SMK Datuk Peter Monjuntin put them on the same 13 points as league leaders SMK Putera of Kelantan, who this week blasted Pahang’s SMK Seberang Temerloh 4-1.

Muhammad Azuhal Aiman Abdul Rahman nailed the first goal early in the second minute to be followed by Muhammad Adib Hamidi (11th minute), Ahmad Azraf Ahmad Azam (15th) and Muhammad Alim Ashraf Zailani (35th).

SMK Seberang Temerloh’s only goal of the game was scored by Wan Mohamad Afiq Wan Azmi in the 70th minute.
