# V Shem-Wee Kiong get big boost for Rio ticket

# Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong Olympic hopes take a tumble

Three-time champion Datuk Lee Chong Wei started his campaign in the USD300,000 Yonex Sunrise India Open SuperSeries in New Delhi on a winning note with a 21-11, 21-17 win over Japanese qualifier Kazumasa Sakai in the first round on Wednesday.

It was Chong Wei’s first match since his first round defeat to India’s B. Sai Praneeth in the Yonex All-England SuperSeries Premier in early this month. Following the All-England defeat Chong Wei later withdrew from the Swiss Open Grand Prix Gold.

Chong Wei faced some resistance from Kazumasa in the second set as both players fought point until 8-8 before the Malaysian ace took three points in a row to take the break.  The Japanese again came back strong to narrow the gap to 15-16 before Chong Wei prevailed in 39 minutes.

He will face Hong Kong’s Wei Nam in the second round on Thursday for a place in the quarter-finals. Wei Nan took three sets to defeat Thai veteran Boonsak Ponsana in three sets 16-21, 21-15, 21-18.

In the men’s doubles national No 1 pair Goh V Shem-Tan Wee Kiong, (World No 14) boosted their Olympic hopes when they cleared the first round with a straight sets 21-19, 21-18 win over No 8 seeds Li Junhui-Liu Yuchen in 31 minutes.

However, independent pair Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong, ranked No 16, were first round casualties when they fell to a 12-21, 21-23 defeat to Korean No 2 seeds Kim Gi-jung-Kim Sa-rang in 36 minutes.

The Malaysians had beaten the same pair in the Malaysian Masters semi-finals in Penang earlier in January.
