Malaysia’s former national No 1 women’s singles shuttler Tee Jing Yi who has switched to doubles recently gave her badminton career a shot in the arm by reaching the women’s doubles final with Joyce Choong in the CIPUTRA Hanoi-Yonex Sunrise Vietnam International Challenge in Hanoi.

However, the Malaysian pair failed to land the title in their first outing when they were beaten in three-sets by Japan’s Erina Honda-Nozomi Shimizu in the final. The Japanese won 21-14, 19-21, 21-14 in 52 minutes.

It was a remarkable performance by the newly formed Malaysian pair to save Jinh Yi’s badminton career. In the semi-finals the jnseeded Malaysians upset third seeds Ririn Amelia-Anna Cheong (Indonesia-Malaysia)21-13, 21-15.

Vietnam veteran and top seed Nguyen Tien Minh gave his home supporters plenty to cheer when he defeated Thailand’s second seeded Khosit Phetpradap 21-14, 21-17 for men’s singles title.

The women’s singles title went to Thailand’s Pornpawee Chochuwong when the second seed upset home favourite and top seed Thu Thi Trang 21-16, 21-17 in 50 minutes.
