Malaysia Cup kingpins Selangor who have won the most sought after silverware in Malaysian football a record 33-times stunned Johor Darul Takzim 3-2 in a Group D match at the Selayang Stadium on Tuesday.

And the man who made it all count was none other than former JDT player Amri Yahyah. The veteran international scored a brace after a the Red Giants took a 1-0 lead through Fairuz Abdul Aziz on 33 minutes.

Amri scored Selangor’s second and his first on the night a minute later. The Southern Tigers, who had not conceded a goal in their two previous matches in the group, however, hit back strongly to tie the score at 2-2 with national striker Hazwan Bakri and Darren Lok netting in the 55th and 68th minutes.

However, it was not their night at Selayang. Selangor earned a penalty in the last minute of play and Amri duly converted the spot kick for full points as Selangor moved to the top of the group with seven points.

The Southern Tigers dropped to second spot with four points while Terengganu remained third with three points after a scoreless draw against winless Sarawak at the State Stadium in Kuching.

Kelantan also registered a shock result when the Red Warriors handed defending champions Kedah a 3-1 beating at the Sultan Mohd IV Stadium in Kota Bahru in a Group C match.

Lebanese striker Abou Bakr Al-Mel scored a brace for the Red Warriors in the 65th and 90th minutes after Senegalese Morgaro Gomis had opened scoring. Kosovo midfielder Liridon Kraniqi netted a penalty for Kedah in the 85th minute.

Despite the setback Kedah remained on top in Group C with six points with superior goal difference. Melaka United and Kelantan are in second and third place – also with six points each.

Melaka defeated UiTM FC 2-1 at the Hang Jebat Stadium in Melaka – riding on a brace by their Brazilian midfielder Felipe Almedia De Souza – who from freekicks in the 22nd and 64th minutes. UiTM FC scored through their Nigerian striker Akanni Sunday Wasiu in the 45th minute.

Perak continued with their fine run in Group B and kept their place on the top after a 1-1 draw against Felda United at the Tun Abdul Razak Stadium in Jengka.

In a dull match Perak scored first through a Shahrul Saad in the 66th minute – only to see Felda reply in the next minute through Zah Rahan Krangar who took full advantage of another blunder by Perak skipper Shahrol Kalam. It was the national defender’s second such mistake in a week after a similar blunder gave Selangor a 1-0 win in Ipoh in a league match.

Perak have seven points from three matches while Felda are second on five points with Kuala Lumpur (2 points) and PKNS FC (1 point) in third and fourth spots respectively.

Another Perak team – PKNP (Perak SEDC), shocked Negri Sembilan 2-0 at the Proton Stadium in Tanjung Malim in an afternoon match. Brazilian hitman Gilberto Fortunato scored both the goals (84th and 92nd) for PKNP.

PKNP remained on top in Group A with seven points while Negri plunged to the bottom with only two points after T-Team and Pahang battled to a 1-1 draw at the Sultan Ismail Nasiruddin Shah Stadium in Kuala Terengganu.

Pahang moved to second place with three points while T-Team are third place with two points – edging Negri Sembilan on goal difference. – BY RIZAL ABDULLAH
