Malaysia is set to make sporting history with the debut of Liga Teqball Malaysia (LTM) 2023.
A monumental event in Malaysia Teqball, the competition will be hosted for the first time by the Malaysia Teqball Association (MTA) at KL Gateway Mall Central Piazza over two days from 28 to 29 October 2023 with a prize money of RM15,000.00. Â
LTM 2023 will offer three categories featuring menâs and womenâs singles, menâs and womenâs doubles, and mixed doubles. Each team can consist of four to eight players, and they will compete in a round-robin format. The team that finishes at the top of the league will be declared the champion. Â
Beyond the competition, LTM 2023 serves as the official qualifying event to determine the Malaysian team that will represent the nation at the sixth annual World Teqball Championships 2023 in Bangkok, Thailand. Scheduled from 29 November to 3 December 2023, this global event will witness the best talents from around the world vying for international acclaim.Â
MTA President KJ Siva said, âLTM 2023 represents more than just a singular event. With Teqball being a relatively new sport in the country, LTM 2023 will stand as a platform for our nationâs teqers to truly shine. This exhilarating competition not only introduces the dynamic sport of Teqball to the Malaysian public but also unveils the extraordinary skills and talents that define it. It will also unite a growing community of players and enthusiasts, nurturing the spirit of sporting unity. Â
âWith the unwavering support from the Youth and Sports Ministry (KBS) and our sponsors for LTM 2023, we aspire to not only foster the sport in the country but also to inspire the youth of Malaysia to participate in it and contribute to its growth,â he said. Â
A Phenomenal RiseÂ
Since its introduction in Malaysia in 2017, Teqball has grown exponentially with the MTA coming into existence in 2018. Fuelled by the sportâs surging popularity, eight states â Selangor, Negeri Sembilan, Kuala Lumpur, Kedah, Perak, Melaka, Perlis, and Pahang â have successfully formed their respective state associations and hosting their own state league tournaments, further contributing to the sportâs presence across the nation. On the international stage, Malaysian teqers have achieved remarkable success in the sport. Notably, they secured second place, clinching four silver medals at the Pre-SEA Games Teqball Championship 2023.Â
The football-based sport originated from Hungary in 2012. It combines elements of football, sepak takraw, and table tennis, and is played on a specially curved table known as the Teq table where players hit a football back and forth with any part of the body except their arms and hands. Â
With legendary footballing figures such as Ronaldinho, Christian Karembeu, Luis Figo, and William Gallas named as global ambassadors of Teqball, the sport does not just appeal to professional fans but also attracts amateur enthusiasts eager to enhance their technical ability, concentration, and stamina. Â
