It has been a remarkable journey for Malayaia’s ace shuttler Datuk Lee Chong Wei as he regains his status as the world No 1 in Jakarta when he plays Denmark’s Jan O Jorgensen in the men’s singles final on Sunday.

He marched into the final in the USD900,000 BCA Indonesia Open Superseries Premier with a 21-9, 21-18 win over Indonesia’s Ihsan Maulana Mustofa in 40 minutes.

Jorgensen was taken to three sets by China’s Tian Houwei before prevailing with a 21-14, 18-21, 21-17 win in 69 minutes.

In the final Chong Wei will be gunning for his sixth Indonesian Open title while Jorgensen became the first European winner when he won in 2014.

Chong Wei, seeded second in Jakarta, will be the new number one and will overtake China’s Chen Long – and it does not matter even if he fails to beat Jorgensen. Winning the title will garner the Malaysian 11,000 points while a runners-up spot will get him 9,350 points.

Chen Long’s current points standing is 92,194 to Chong Wei’s 88,953 total – a difference of 3,241 points.

A top four in the world rankings will assure a favourable seedings in the Rio Olympics in August. Chong Wei has come through the hard way in world rankings after an all-time low of 182 when he was banned for eight months for alleged doping scandal.

Meanwhile it was the end of the road for Malaysia’s top women’s doubles pair Vivian Hoo-Woon Khe Wei when they were beaten by third seeds Tang Yuanting-Yu Yang of China 21-15, 21-9 in 29 minutes.

There was a major upset in the women’s singles semi-finals. World No 1 and top seed Carolina Marin of Spain lost 16-21, 21-11, 21-17 to fourth seed Wang Yihan in 78 minute. Unseeded Tai Tzu Ying of Taiwan also registered an upset when she handed a fourth seed Wang Shixian a 21-9, 21-15 beating in 34 minutes.

Top seeds Lee Yong-dae-Yoo Yeon-seong of Korea will meet China’s fifth seeds Chai Biao-Hong Wei in the men’s doubles final.
